What is Stress?
None of us likes to feel stressed but sometimes it is out of our control. I certainly know that feeling of holding stress in, you've been bottling it up for too long and you need to let it go. It's hard to pin down what stress means, it could be a situation or event that has put a load of pressure on you. It could be a reaction to a conversation or argument. There are a lot of ways stress can pop up.
Stress is your body's way of telling you how you're responding to any change. Your body then takes action to these changes and start to send signals physically, mentally, and emotionally around your body. You can experience stress from your current environment, your body, and the thoughts in your mind.
What makes us stressed?
Many things can make us stressed in life. It can be as simple as dropping your phone, losing a job or missing the train on the way to work, but not all life experiences like these have a negative effect. Even positive things in life can make us stressed, such as changing jobs, moving house, having a baby or even going on holiday can become stressful.
Stress can help us sometimes, the feeling of pressure helps to force us to complete tasks or get out of sticky situations quickly. Many people can deal with a certain level of stress. On the other hand, if your stress becomes common then there could be some issues. Rather than helping us push through barriers, this stress can make us feel overwhelmed and we end up being unable to cope.
How can we turn this around?
Try to keep things simple and don't be too hard on yourself. Look for the positive things in life and note down things that make you feel grateful and happy in life.
If, however, you remain feeling overwhelmed and stressed, try seeking professional help because they can support you effectively. Most if not all people feel hesitant to seek professional help. But it's ok, we aren't perfect, just take one step at a time. It's necessary to get help as soon as possible so you can begin to feel better.
